With unfettered access to the Zappa Trust and all archival footage, Zappa explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex Winters (Bill and Teds movie franchises, The Lost Boys) assembly features appearances by Franks widow Gail Zappa and several of Franks musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.
The soundtrack is a perfect complement to the film being offered in 2 deluxe formats: 3CD and 5LP editions for the Zappa completist. Showcasing 68 total songs, there are 12 previously unreleased recordings from the Zappa archive along with his Saturday Night Live performance from 1978; 25 additional Zappa songs from his extensive catalog spanning four decades; songs from Zappas labels Straight / Bizarre Records like No Longer Umpire by Alice Cooper and The Captains Fat Theresa Shoes by The GTOs; 2 classical compositions by Edgard Varese and Igor Stravinsky; and 26 Original Score cues newly composed by John Frizzell for the documentary.
A 2LP edition will also be made available for the more casual or newer Zappa fans the film draws in that will include 8 of the unreleased recordings from the Zappa archive and the SNL performance and 13 recordings from Zappas extensive recording career.
