In May 2025, we release our first album, My Grief on the Sea, on vinyl. This debut is brimming with superb contributions from leading Irish and international composers, musicians, and singers including Agu, Linda Buckley, Cathal Coughlan, Adrian Crowley, Neil Farrell, Eileen Gogan, Tony Higgins, Carol Keogh, Michelle O'Rourke, Wally Nkikita, Brigid Mae Power, Michael J Sheehy, Mike Smalle, and Jah Wobble.
The first in a series of major releases from Bring Your Own Hammer, this album presents a compelling collection of songs about the sea, sea journeys, and migration to and from Ireland in the nineteenth century. You are invited to journey with us as we criss-cross the Atlantic world, following the remaining threads of lives shaped—often irrevocably—by the sea.
The album opens with Michelle O'Rourke’s beautiful title track, My Grief on the Sea, where echoes of a lament from a bog in Co. Roscommon mourn a lost lover who has departed overseas in the decades following the Famine. In Golden Streets, Bitter Tears, Adrian Crowley and Brigid Mae Power set migrants’ letters to North America to haunting melodies that evoke both hope and heartbreak.
Carol Keogh’s A Pair of Packed Valises (before the Dunbrody), 1849 places you on the quays of New Ross, watching Biddy and Catherine Keogh depart for New York. Meanwhile, Old Oak Road by Mike Smalle with Cathal Coughlan and Jah Wobble tells the melancholy tale of Mary Connaughty’s transatlantic journey in 1881.
In The Man with Open Arms, Cathal Coughlan and Linda Buckley take us through the roads of Co. Carlow during the 1832 cholera epidemic, telling the story of a man called Crowley returning to Ireland after thirty years at sea. The Female Cabin Boy, performed by Eileen Gogan and Neil Farrell, captures the poignancy of disguise and longing as a woman sails the seas hidden in plain sight.
With Embarkation (Float Away), Tony Higgins and Agu portray the vibrant yet sorrowful departure of multitudes from the quays of Dublin during the Famine. In Over the Ghosts, Mike Smalle and Wally Nkikita trace the remarkable journey of Joseph Keys—from enslavement in Virginia to his Atlantic crossing from Baltimore in 1844.
Mike Smalle returns in The Oscillating Sea, inviting listeners to contemplate the elemental power and rhythm of the ocean itself. The album closes with The Weight of Water by Michael J. Sheehy, a starkly beautiful piece capturing Marie and her lover swimming off the coast of Ireland as the Famine’s devastation pushes people from land to sea.

Refunds
