When the Style Council released Café Bleu in 1984, Paul Weller and Mick Talbot set out a new blueprint for British pop – folding jazz, soul and sharp songwriting into something cosmopolitan, daring, and self-defined. It didn’t feel like a debut so much as a declaration of a new direction.
This Special Edition gathers previously unheard studio material from the period – demos, alternate takes, and unreleased songs that capture how quickly the group were moving, and how far they were willing to push ideas in progress rather than simply polishing them. Alongside that, the set includes BBC session recordings and live material that show the group in full voice, with momentum and purpose.
Broadcaster Gary Crowley contributes new sleeve notes, offering context and perspective on why this remains such a pivotal moment in Weller’s creative arc – a period where his approach to songwriting and arrangement opened into something more expansive, curious and linked to European and American influences in equal measure.
