Following the departure of Wire’s drummer Robert Grey in 1990, WIR rose phoenix-like from the ashes of the acclaimed UK post-punk band. Formed to fulfil the final phase of Wire’s contract with Mute Records, WIR marked a striking stylistic departure. Embracing a more sequence-based and electronically driven sound, the project saw the band break their own rules—Graham Lewis took on most of the vocal duties, and they even sampled material from Wire’s earlier catalogue, effectively recontextualising their past within a new, minimalist framework.

Though creatively bold, WIR was never intended as a long-term project. Besides recording their sole album The First Letter, the group performed only a handful of live shows and staged two multi-artist “conceptual happenings” under the title I Saw You—one in Clapham on election night in April 1992, and the other in Vienna in February 1993. During the Vienna trip, they also recorded a radio session for Austrian national broadcaster ORF, facilitated by Peter Rehberg (later the visionary behind MEGO, and now sadly passed). This session was first released on CD by Touch in 1996, comprising two long-form tracks totaling nearly 25 minutes. After the original CD run sold out, the rights reverted to the band, who reissued it digitally via pinkflag in 2007.

Now, in 2025, the material returns in a fully remastered vinyl, CD, and digital edition, bolstered by a newly recorded version of WIR’s most pop-leaning track, So and Slow. This reimagined take—described tongue-in-cheek as a “Taylor Swift style re-recording”—echoes how the band performed it live: recognisable, yet structurally distinct from any previously released version. It's a fitting addition to this deep-cut chapter in the Wire/WIR legacy.

Track List:

1. The First Letter (2025 re-master)
2. Sexy & Rich (Janet) (2025 re-master)
3. So & Slow (2025 re-recording)
