On There’s A Whole World Out There, the second album by Canadian four-piece Arm’s Length, there’s a song called “Palinopsia.” The title comes from the Greek words palin (“again”) and opsia (“seeing”), referring to a visual phenomenon in which an image lingers even after it’s no longer present. For singer and lyricist Allen Steinberg, “Palinopsia” captures the feeling of “pure devotion or love toward someone who may no longer be part of your life.” But the idea resonates across the entire album. Over the course of its 12 songs, Steinberg reflects on people and moments that have passed, confronting the emotional residue they’ve left behind.
Still, there’s a marked shift between this record and the band’s 2022 debut, Never Before Seen, Never Again Found. “This record speaks more to my life at the moment than the past,” Steinberg explains. “Even though there’s still a good amount of past on it, it’s about how I’m dealing with it now—as opposed to being enveloped in it. There’s more a sense of being on the other side of it, of seeing it with hindsight.” That tonal evolution reflects Steinberg’s own growth. “I’m probably just a bit more mature,” he adds, “as my frontal lobe is developing as we speak.”
Produced by Anton DeLost—who also worked on the band’s debut and their 2021 EP Everything Nice—There’s A Whole World Out There broadens Arm’s Length’s sonic and emotional horizons. Steinberg wrote most of the lyrics and instrumental parts alone in his room, capturing rough ideas as voice memos. He then collaborated with drummer Jeff Whyte to add percussion and flesh out the arrangements. The songs didn’t truly come to life, however, until they were recorded in full with bassist Jeremy Whyte and guitarist Ben Greenblatt. The result is a record that channels raw emotion through sharpened songwriting, building on the foundation of their earlier work and expanding into something even more powerful.
